Halloween Writing

October has been filled with spooky sentence writing. Each child wrote 2 sentences with a Halloween theme. Again, we're trying to work on each sentence having an adjective, noun, verb, as well as including where and when our sentences are taking place. The kids had a great time with their illustrations, and customizing their Voki characters! Enjoy!

A fresh start

A new year has come, and with it new faces in my classroom. We'll be working hard this year on writing complete sentences, and I'm hopeful that we will "graduate" to paragraph writing.

Our first assignment involved brainstorming words to use in our sentences about pigs. We talked about nouns, adjectives, verbs, as well as, where and when our sentences could be taking place.

Chocolate Poetry

4th grade students at Marion Elementary just finished up a book unit on Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". This was an especially great experience for them because they were able to participate in a Polycom book group with classes in Canada. The children looked forward to sharing their writing and projects with the Canadian classes each Wednesday. We've been working on types of words in our classroom and have been concentrating on adjectives recently. We combined this with the chocolate unit, and wrote some chocolate poetry.

After completing our adjective poetry we worked on reading our poetry aloud and fluency. If you press play on each of the Voki characters, you will hear the student's reading their own writing.

Pick a prompt #4

Students were allowed to pick from three prompts.

When I first get up I use the bathroom. I take off my pajamas and get in the shower. When I get out I dry off. Then I put on my make up. I have fun doing all that before school.

The best part of school is math time. In math we do math boxes some times. We practice our subtraction and addition facts. I love math in Miss Buller’s because she leads us through, then we’re on our own. I feel happy because Miss Buller even let’s us do corrections.

The best part of school is science. Once we dissected owl pellets. We had to wear gloves and do it with our hands and tools. We found a skull and other bones. It was fun.

On Halloween my friends and I...

On Halloween my friends and I are going trick or treating. When I go trick or treating I wear a costume. I will go to my Gram’s to get candy. I go to a creepy house. On Halloween my friends and I go home after we are done.

On Halloween my friends and I are going trick or treating. I’m going with my best friend Emily. I am going to be a girl with a really long dress, a hat, scarf, jewelry and cool shoes. I will get a lot of candy. Halloween is so cool.

Assignment 3: Pick a prompt

We are currently working on how to write a paragraph, complete with introduction sentence, 3 supporting detail sentences, and a wrap-up sentence. Students were given 3 prompts to choose from, then asked to brainstorm, write their sentences, and produce a final copy.

After school I always go to the park. My sister and I play. We play on the slide. We play tag in the slide. When we get done at the park we go home.

I always laugh when my best friend makes a funny face. She makes her eyes really big. Then she takes her two pointer fingers and puts them in her mouth. Then I start laughing my gut out. Then we finally stop laughing.

After school I always do my homework. I always have math boxes to do. On math boxes I have some addition to do. On my math boxes I sometimes have enter-change-to boxes. At home it sometimes takes me a long time to do homework.
